RARE Victorian Antique "Nez Pince" Eye Glasses, Bi-Focals for a Woman
DESCRIPTION: Scans show it all.....a complete pair of RARE "NEZ PINCE" antique
Victorian eye glasses. As typical with this style, these are held by and on the
nose, without side frames.
Regular NEZ PINCE style glasses are fairly scarce. They were popular with the
upper classes towards the end of the 1800's to the first couple of decades of
the 1900's. They were therefore only used for a limited time. THIS TYPE WAS
FAVORED BY PRESIDENTS TEDDY ROOSEVELT AND WOODROW WILSON.
Most of these hung by a strap around the neck. The hole where the strap
attached is on the left. THESE ARE RARER THAN MOST AS THEY ARE BIFOCALS AND
ALSO BECAUSE THEY WERE WORN BY A WOMAN. THEY WERE FITTED WITH A FINE GOLD CHAIN
WITH A GOLD BOBBY PIN AT THE OTHER END TO INSERT IN HER HAIR. IF THEY FELL OFF
OR WERE TAKEN OFF THEY WOULD JUST DANGLE FROM HER HAIR.
THESE ARE RARE AS I HAVE NEVER HAD A PAIR WITH THE CHAIN AND PIN STILL ON
THEM!!! And being bifocals!!! Lenses could be changed to use, or they could
obviously become part of your collection or for use with theatrical costumes.
This is the only pair like this I have ever had and only the third pair of any
nez pince I have ever had in many years of collecting !!!
