Fabric: POLYESTER
Polyester is a category of polymers that contain the ester functional group in
their main chain. As a specific material, it most commonly refers to a type
called polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Polyesters include naturally occurring
chemicals, such as in the cutin of plant cuticles, as well as synthetics
through step-growth polymerization such as polybutyrate. Natural polyesters and
a few synthetic ones are biodegradable, but most synthetic polyesters are not.
This material is used very widely in clothing.
Fabric: SOFT SHELL
Softshell is a class of knit or woven materials, made from polyester and
nylon, used to make technical outdoor clothing that essentially bridges the gap
between waterproof hardshell jackets and highly breathable fleece jackets.
They’re more breathable (but less water and wind resistant), more flexible, and
generally more durable than hardshell materials, and more protective than
fleece. Softshells emerged in the early to mid-2000s in outdoor activities like
climbing and mountaineering—aerobic activities with dynamic weather conditions,
where a highly breathable, somewhat waterproof, somewhat windproof piece of
technical clothing kept its wearer moving, dry, and warm.
Lining: FLEECE
Fleece provides warmth, comfort and breathability. Fleece is incredibly
lightweight. This makes it great for packing into small bags and rucksacks,
when you don’t want to carry too much heavy kit with you. Fleece gets dry very
quickly. It is a good alternative to wool.
Technology: DWR
The DWR treatment is the first line of defense against wet weather conditions
and prevents the face fabric from becoming saturated. DWR is a polymer applied
to the face fabric that creates microscopic pegs, or hairs, that protrude from
the fabric. These pegs encourage the water droplets to band together and roll
off, instead of spreading out along the face of the fabric and soaking through.
